Statement on the Prolonged Detention of Journalist Muhyadin
The Somali Region Journalists Association (SRJA) is deeply concerned about the continued detention of our colleague, Muhyadin, who has been imprisoned in Jigjiga since February 12, 2024. Despite a court ruling on May 2, 2024, sentencing him to two years in prison, significant delays have impeded the transfer of his case to the Supreme Court for appeal.
These delays raise serious concerns regarding the administration of justice and the protection of journalists’ rights in the Somali Region. The prolonged wait for an official court decision suggests administrative inefficiencies or potential deliberate stalling tactics, which undermine the rule of law.
We firmly believe that “justice delayed is justice denied.” The SRJA calls for immediate action to expedite the judicial process for Muhyadin’s appeal. We urge the authorities to uphold the principles of fairness and due process, ensuring Muhyadin receives a just and timely hearing.
Our Commitments:
- Advocacy: We will continue to document and publicize Muhyadin’s case, collaborating closely with legal representatives to ensure all legal avenues are pursued swiftly.
- Media Coverage: We will intensify media coverage and public awareness about the delays in Muhyadin’s case, mobilizing both local and international media to report on this injustice.
- International Support: We will engage with international human rights organizations and press freedom groups to apply pressure on the authorities for a fair judicial process.
- Social Media Campaign: We will launch a social media campaign to gather widespread support and maintain public attention on Muhyadin’s case.
- Solidarity: We call upon fellow journalists and media organizations to show solidarity with Muhyadin through statements, articles, and joint advocacy actions.
Our collective efforts remain steadfast. We are committed to seeking justice for Muhyadin and will continue to fight for his immediate and fair treatment.
